A Quick Personal Note on Criminal Law and Clients: My clients are rarely bad people, they are usually good honest hardworking people being punished by unfairly punitive and many times unjust laws. My clients who are alleged to have committed what I would consider to be true crimes, are usually in the position they find themselves for many reasons beyond simply wanting to be criminal and likely could have avoided the situation they were in had there been a greater system of support and services to help them cope with their other problems and issues. Everyone makes mistakes, but only some get charged. If you have been charged, I help mitigate, defend, and counsel those who find themselves in the situation of criminal charges and to solve that problem, as well as many others in other areas of the law for non-criminal clients.

I believe that if punishment occurs in a criminal justice system for misconduct, that the punishment should fit the crime, should be designed to rehabilitate the offender and reintroduce that person to society in the least destructive way possible to them as well as the community.

Finally, I believe that no person deserves to be in a metal cage for even 1 minute over a plant as benign as cannabis for the simple growth, distribution, or possession thereof amongst consenting adults, particularly in a free society such as the United States.

I offer a free 30-minute initial office consultation on criminal charges by appointment. Other appointments are billed at my standard rate. You can schedule an appointment via telephone, 503-227-6000 for my downtown Portland office which is also forwarded to my mobile when I am out of the office for extended periods of time. My mobile will generally be off most days due to local court, morning meetings, or other client work till 10am and I generally schedule most appointments in the afternoon to balance morning and afternoon workloads. If I am unavailable please leave a name, number, and a detailed message so I may return your message.

Please note: If I am in court, my cell phone will always be off due to court rules, but I will answer messages once I leave court. Court dates and other courthouse work generally begins at 8am and can run for a couple of minutes or many hours depending on a variety of factors. Please leave a message with your name, a number I can reach you at if you wish for me to call you back, and a time you can be reached.

If I am unavailable, I am likely at court, in trial, or in a client meeting and will return your call as soon as I have an opportunity, usually the same day. I make it a point of my practice to personally speak with and assist each of my clients, but this means, on occasion, I may be unavailable to speak with a client at the moment they call. Please understand that I value my clients and make it a point to devote my time and full energy to each and every client such that you get my full attention when we are working together to solve your legal problem.

You may also email me @ John@Law420.com as I check email frequently, but please do not email sensitive or confidential information. I can also schedule on request for early morning or evening client meetings for clients with work schedules or time constraints and home visits for clients with disabilities or for whom privacy is a concern. If you are calling on behalf of an individual in custody, please have handy the information as to their current location if you have it available.
